Storm Cove Dreams

You stand on the road in the middle of town. Facing out toward the ocean. Wind tears at your clothes, seeming to shift directions on a whim. Far off, you can see the three stone pillars with startling clarity.

The ground beneath your feet shivers.

Lights appear above the pillars. On then off. A single blink. First above the left, then center, then right. And back again. Brilliant points of light of subtly different color against the dusk sky.

The ground shudders and groans.

All three lights come up at once, brighter than ever. They rise into the air, high above the island, until they seem to be a single point of light, high in the sky.

In a flash, the light streaks toward you. You try to move out of the way, but you're rooted to the spot.

At the moment it should have made impact, everything changed. In a flash, the landscape changed and yet seemed to be the same. Shadows looked sinister, unsettled but not moving. The sky is starless dark. The island has only one pillar, taller than any of the other three. The light burning above it, a sickly blueish shade that felt like you were looking at the sun despite being no brighter than a star.

The ground rumbles.

In the dark corners, you can see the residents. Or you assume them to be. They're twisted and warped, wrapped in shadow. Familiar faces wearing unfamiliar expressions. And they're all staring at you. Hungry. They move toward you. Swarming.

The ground splits.

It opens up beneath your feet and you fall into darkness. You try to cry out, but the wind tears the sounds away from you. And they follow after. The shadows of people. Pouring in through the dwindling tear above you. As you fall, you have only one thought.

You must close it before any more can get through.
